Chichi a la Cirque Du Soleil! (not really, lol. But wouldn’t that be cool?)
First trapeze lesson = success! Thought I’d share a sneak peek at my  last attempt of the day and first partner catch! Not bad work in an hour, eh?

I’m sore (soooo sore), bruised (soooo bruised), and happypants as hell. It was literally the scariest thing I’ve ever tried (oh-my-gaaaaah), but I’m so thrilled I did it! Facing your fears always comes with a super life high. :) Will be going back for sure.

Went with awesome ladies and we all did SO well! Can’t stop watching the videos (though I’ll only share mine. Will post the “learning/sucking” ones once I edit).

I can’t believe how fast the seasons change! Moved our sweat up a full hour, and still finish in the dark. :)

Who says you need a gym?

Grass + bench + stairs = awesome workout. :)

Grass Circuit

1. 1-2 min Jog
2. 20-40 Walking Lunges
3. 10-30 Burpees
4. 1-2 min Plank

Bench Circuit

1. 10-50 Pushups - Incline: hands on bench (easier) or Decline: feet on bench (harder).
2. 10-50 Tricep Dips
3. 10-20 V-Ups (butt on bench, draw knees into chest)
4. 30-100 Step Ups

Stair Circuit

1. 2-5 minutes stair climb
2. 1-2 minutes Toe Taps (quickly tap toes on first stair, alternating & bringing knees up)
3. 10-20 Calf Raises
4. 10-30 Single Leg Squats (back leg on stair for balance).

Try any of these circuits 2-3 times, mix them up or make your own! There are loads of ways to stay fit without equipment or a gym.

No excuses. :)

My ‘gym’. Perfect AM sweat in the city!

It felt amazing to feel the wind on my face, and experience the city so quiet. Loved it. The sunrise, the birds and my tunes. Ahhh…:)

Up again tomorrow with my TRX. Fingers crossed for no rain! Today was glorious: I’d love a repeat!

It hasn’t always been easy for me to get up early to workout, but one of the biggest things that’s helped is the one thing most people DON’T do: going to bed early.

It’s so funny, but one of the biggest reasons many people skip their morning workouts is failing to get enough sleep. It’s not like you’re a failure for not being able to get out of bed; your body needs the rest! That doesn’t change simply because you WANT to workout in the morning. You can help get to your goals sooner by helping yourself out.

Early rise means early bed and applies doubly for AM workouts: working out tired can cause injury, stall results (your body needs sleep, not sweat) and a drop in performance all day. When it comes to sleep vs. sweat (when you’re tired), sleep wins.

Help yourself out by unplugging sooner, laying out your workout clothes & shoes by your bed, have your workout ready to go, have a breakfast plan (my smoothie stuff is ready to roll) and make your morning routine as ‘no think’ as possible.

The best time to workout is when it works best for you (studies show we have better results when we workout around the same time of day, each day, instead of morning vs. evening). If you’re always zonked after work or school, mornings might be your ‘best’ time.:)

Already signed up for next year and hoping to try The Super Spartan as well (12+ km I think). Now that I know how to train for it, it doesn’t seem so scary. :)

This was one of my favorite moments from Sunday’s race. It was truly emotional and amazing to witness.

Bloody, sweaty and bruised, I was waiting to watch another friend start the race when I heard the crowd roar from the finish line. You could tell there was something going on, but it was far too crowded to catch what it was all about. A few moments later, they announced that a 72 year old woman had completed the race. Our jaws dropped. What? THAT race? Knowing how hard the race was, it was difficult to imagine that a grandmother would be able to complete it.

But we hadn’t heard the whole story.

Not only did she complete the race, but she did so on a whim. With no training. With asthma. And with loads of encouragement from her Spartan race daughter, who was at her side the whole time.

This was truly inspirational to witness and tears flowed from my eyes as I read her story. Her daughter recounts the experience on the Spartan Race blog.  

Less than a mile away from the finish line, there were a series of obstacles. The only one my mother missed was the spear throw. I did the burpees for her. I knew she was getting exhausted but with every step she took I pushed her, saying we were almost there. If we had gotten this far, we were not giving up now!!! I could see how tired and dehydrated she was. It was about 104F that day. She climbed up theat 8 foot wall like a cat! She went through the tunnels. She made her way to the electric barbed wire. She went up the cargo nets with great agility. She ran the inclined platforms. Then came the final obstacle before facing the gladiators: the inclined slippery wall with rope. I guided my mother telling her how to position her body. We were side by side. She barely had strength in her arms. She said she couldn’t take another step. I said to her: “Mom! This is the last one!!! Now give it all that you’ve got! And I know you have it! Now pull!!! PULL!!!! YOU CAN DO IT! Take baby steps and pull yourself up there!!!”

Another Spartan Chick was at the bottom and helped me by guiding my mother as I was extending my hand from the top of the ramp. The crowd was going wild seeing my mom. She was near the top and said she couldn’t get over. I remember yelling “ YOU GOT THIS MOM! Do it!” And she did! The crowd soared! It was a magical moment. I think my heart stopped when I saw her legs make it over. We made our way down cautiously. I looked at her, hugged her saying how proud I was to be at her side, and how incredible I believed her to be. As we turned around, a few yards ahead of us the gladiators were waiting. I had promised my mother I wouldn’t let any gladiator tackle her. She was going to stay at my side and I was going to shove them if someone dared to approach her. As we made our way towards them, I eyed them cautiously. All four of them bowed down in front of us. They looked at my mother and applauded her. Everyone around the finishing area was applauding and cheering. Arm in arm, mother and daughter crossed the finish line with tears in our eyes. We had made it! My mom Johanne had made it!

My father was waiting for us at the finish line. His face said it all. He hugged both of us and then held my mom in his arms. Clearly you could tell how emotional he was to see his muddy wife, that against all odds finished a Spartan Race, despite not having trained for it and suffering from asthma.

I can tell you my mom was a Spartan Super Star! She was being stopped left and right and everyone wanted their pictures taken with her. The MC even made an announcement about Johanne Di Cori, the 72 year-old Spartan Chick/grandmother that just finished the course. I was tearing up for the most part after the race. Words couldn’t and still can’t express how proud I am of my mother. She is the reason why I am strong and determined. I just can’t stress that enough.

A couple more Spartan Race pics for you! I’ll have more available as the week goes on and I can’t wait to tell you all about my CRAZY experience! INSANE.

Spartan-y posts are on their way for those of you who had questions about the race. I feel like I’m just coming down from the adrenaline and my brain is only just starting to work again. P.S - The level of soreness is very similar to what I experienced in my first round of Insanity Asylum. Intense! Took yesterday off entirely: just a nice long walk with the pup and some stretching after a long shower. Today I’m doing another LONG stretch and some foam rolling. Very much needed. I could barely walk by the end of Sunday afternoon. The bruises and scrapes were part of that (plus my knee was messed up), but the muscle soreness is HIGH. It started to kick within a few hours of the race and (hopefully) peaked yesterday. 

Depending on soreness tomorrow, may head out for a short run, but it’ll be a few days before I start working like I was before. Thankfully, this recovery will mean a HELLA performance gain. Granted, there’s still a little swelling, but my entire body is in the process of building itself back up stronger than before. Eating incredibly well and drinking loads of water. I have a feeling I’m gonna bust some PR’s next week. :)

Turbo Kickin’ For A Cause! A few new pics from the Mercy Project fundraiser I participated in last month!

The Mercy Project

The Mercy Project is a Montreal-based non-profit organization that works in collaboration with community partners to support healthcare initiatives where resources are limited.
The Mercy Project was founded by a group of Canadian volunteers who met while participating in the Concordia Volunteer Abroad Program in Northern Uganda. While in Uganda the volunteers provided support to a daycare where the children had limited access to healthcare. Profoundly affected by the experience, they created the organization in memory of a four-year-old girl named Mercy who needlessly died from malaria.

Our current project is at St Jude Children’s Home in Gulu, Uganda.

We believe in small movements that make large impacts in peoples lives. Access to healthcare is a human right and we refuse to be overwhelmed by the challenge of poverty. Within our partnering communities we focus on children so that they may have the opportunity to grow and thrive in good health.

Up and at ‘em at the break of dawn… Goooooood morning!

The sky was filled with pretty colors as the sun rose this am; blues, pinks & even a little grey. Met a client for a circuit on the mountain, then took the long way home cause it felt soooo good to be outside. This is what my world looked like at 6:45 this morning. Not a person in sight, no noise pollution & fresh, clean smelling air.

The trees are getting their bud on: it’s officially spring!

We played hard and loved every minute. Great start to my day!
