Michelle Obama: First Lady Of Fitness
Football drills, tennis, biking, running, cycling, dancing, running drills with the cast of The Biggest Loser, and rocking pushups with Ellen Degeneres AND Desmond Tutu…. Michelle Obama certainly walks the walk. And she keeps things fresh by trying new things and mixing up her workouts.
Getting outside, playing a sport, trying a new class, going for a hike etc.: try to vary your workouts from time to time. It helps stave off boredom, will improve your overall fitness and you might discover new favorites. When’s the last time you tried something new? :)

As women, we’re used to hearing about fitness in terms of inches and dress sizes. We may know better, but we’re up against near-constant reminders and pressures to look good and take shortcuts to get there.
The truth is, being a healthy woman isn’t about getting on a scale or measuring your waistline—and we can’t afford to think that way. Instead, we need to start focusing on what matters–on how we feel, and how we feel about ourselves.
I started thinking about exercise as an investment in myself instead of a chore, and I started focusing on the example I wanted to set for my girls. My schedule was dominated by career and kids–not to mention a very busy husband–but thinking about exercise this way made it a priority, even if I had to get up earlier to do it.
That’s what being fit meant to me: feeling good inside and out, and taking control of my health.
Obama Vs. Degeneres - Pushup Competition
Ellen has been working out, so when Michelle Obama and her famous arms were on the show, Ellen couldn’t help but challenge the First Lady to a friendly push-up competition.
Wicked.
Ellen Degeneres Takes On Michelle Obama In A Pushup Competition
Who do you think did more?
(via The Ellen Degeneres Show)
As you know, I’m a Michelle Obama mega-fan. Her commitment to health and fitness goes far beyond what we’ve come to expect from our first ladies and she walks the walk (see her doing pushups with Desmond Tutu above, and tell me it’s not inspiring).
Contrary to popular belief, politics and matters of health do NOT need to go hand in hand and you don’t need to be all or nothing. Whether or not you agree with her politically, her health crusade is one to admire. But clearly, others feel differently.
Saw this headline and it made me sad. Again.
Rep. Sensenbrenner Says Michelle Obama Shouldn’t Give Dietary Advice Because Of Her ‘Large Posterior’
Ummm… what?!?!?!
First of all, I don’t think we’ve ever had a fitter first lady. Her guns grabbed headlines from the get-go, she’s broken a world record for jumping jacks, and she’s doing pushups with world leaders. Second, her booty is FAR from large (I think a booty-off with Kim K would settle that). Stereotypes aside (not all black women have apple booties) genetics tend to determine how round your bottom is. If round, apple bottoms count as unhealthy, we’re in trouble. Third, I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but the fella making the comments is… well… not in the best shape of his life. I’d love to see him and his wife face off against the Obamas in a pick up game. LOVE to see that. LOVE.
In a world where Sports Illustrated models are wrongfully put on a pedestal as the epitome of fitness & health (not saying they aren’t gorgeous - but healthy doesn’t have a body type), we need more role models of health & fitness who’s body types are more realistic and attainable. If women are told that a bod like Michelle’s is anything but beautiful, it’s supporting the FALSE notion that you need to be a size zero to be healthy or desirable .
I mean, COME ON.
While the comments make me angry, I can’t help but believe that if they had to resort to commenting on HER body, they must have little else to talk about. And that’s a shame. Because there’s too much energy going into attacking measures that have been scientifically proven as healthy steps and WAY too little energy going into making this world a better, healthier place. For everyone.

It’s official! Record broken: enter Michelle into the record books!
Congrats to the fittest first lady EVER!
WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama now holds part of a world record.
The first lady announced in an email Monday that her October bid to break the record for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period succeeded. Mrs. Obama says 300,265 people participated, shattering the old record.
In order to achieve her goal, Mrs. Obama led about 400 elementary and middle-school students from Washington in jumping jacks on the South Lawn of the White House. Other jumping jacks events were held around the world on Oct. 11.
The effort was organized by National Geographic Kids magazine in support of the first lady’s Let’s Move! initiative to promote physical fitness and healthy eating for children.

Lol, is there anything she can’t do?
Awesome. :)

Good thing? Bad thing?
Making meals healthier is a step in the right direction, but may encourage more and more parents to bring their children to McDonalds. What many health advocates would like to see is a shift away from fast food, towards healthy meals with fresh produce made at home.
However, you can’t disagree that this is a step in the right direction, specifically for parents & children who ALREADY go to McDonald’s often & who’s eating habits haven’t been changed by warnings about the fat & sodium content of the food.
Win-Win? Lose-Lose? Win-Lose?
WEIGH IN! I wanna hear your thoughts on this….
Excerpt from CNN.com
McDonald’s Happy Meals are getting their fat and calories trimmed, the fast food giant announced Tuesday.
The seemingly ubiquitous Happy Meals that have drawn the ire of health advocates and have been blamed for contributing to childhood obesity, will carry apple slices, reduced portion of french fries and a choice of beverage, including new fat-free chocolate milk and 1% low-fat white milk.
The core of the Happy Meal will remain the same as kids will still get fries (a smaller portion) and a choice of a hamburger, cheeseburger or chicken nuggets.
The changes are scheduled to begin September with the hopes that all 14,000 restaurants will transition to the new Happy Meals by the first quarter of 2012.
The suggested retail price of the Happy Meal will not change.
“By adding fruit in every Happy Meal, McDonald’s hopes to address a challenge children face in meeting the recommended daily consumption of produce,” according to the corporation’s statement.
The new Happy Meal with four pieces of McNuggets, apple slices, smaller French Fries and 1% white milk has 410 calories, 19 grams of fat and 560 milligrams of sodium.
The makeover of the Happy Meal comes after cities and counties began considering Happy Meal toy bans over concerns about nutritional quality and marketing towards children. Happy Meal toys have been banned in San Francisco, and a New York council member has proposed a similar measure this year.
Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University, said McDonald’s had to change its nutritional content because of political and community pressures.
“I see this as a positive development,” he said. “The companies have recognized the pressures from the public, the community and parents to offer healthier choices for children. They’ve begun to respond. There have been criticisms of what they serve children for many years. In the past years, the pressure has intensified, the White House concern about childhood obesity is one source of that pressure.”
First lady Michelle Obama who has spearheaded a public health campaign to prevent childhood obesity commended McDonald’s for making “progress today by providing more fruit and reducing the calories in its Happy Meals. I’ve always said that everyone has a role to play in making America healthier, and these are positive steps toward the goal of solving the problem of childhood obesity.”
McDonald’s promised continuing changes to the nutrition in its meals.
“McDonald’s has been engaging suppliers, government and non-government organizations to determine ways it could play a role in helping society address today’s obesity concerns,” the company’s press release said. “McDonald’s will develop additional fruit and vegetable choices and expects them to roll out over the next few years.”
The apples were not very popular in Happy Meals - only 11% of all kid’s meal purchases included the fruit option. Many customers were not aware of apples as an option, according to the company. They will become a default item on the children’s meal.
The fast food giant also pledged to reduce sodium 15% across the board in its menu by 2015. It recently reduced sodium by 10% in most of its chicken offerings, including the Chicken McNuggets.
McDonald’s also vowed to reduce added sugars, saturated fat and calories through varied portion sizes, reformulations and innovations by 2020.
Brownell said he hoped that reduced sodium and apples in the menu would not give parents “permission to go to McDonalds more than they did before. That’s not a good development.”
It’s a good first step, but doesn’t solve the problem, according to a statement from Corporate Accountability International, which is a frequent critic of McDonald’s. It released a statement saying that McDonald’s “deserves credit for not only taking these steps, but for acknowledging its role in today’s epidemic of diet-related disease in so doing.”
“McDonald’s is taking steps in the right direction, but we should be careful in heaping praise on corporations for simply reducing the scope of the problem they continue to create,” said Kelle Louaillier, executive director of Corporate Accountability International. “Ultimately corporate responsibility is not about securing public relations for cleaning up your own mess, but for not creating the problem in the first place. In this case, that means stopping the marketing of junk food to kids.”
“A little sweat ain’t never hurt nobody.”
Word.
Beyonce has teamed up with first lady Michelle Obama on her “Let’s Move!” initiative in an effort to help fight the rising numbers of childhood obesity in America. She rerecorded her song “Get Me Bodied” transforming it into the kid-friendlier “Move Your Body.”
I like it. I like it a lot. High five ladies!
The video is set to be played on May 3 during a “dance-in” at middle schools across the country. If you’re still a teen in school, or know someone who is, pass the word along! But this isn’t just for students, ANYONE can take part and the video with the choreography is out!
I’ll be learning the choreography this week and (shudder) posting a video on May 3rd! I encourage you to do the same! Come dance with me, if you think you’re up to the challenge. WARNING: I’m an AWESOME hotmess dancer. Bring it! And bring your friends!
