Stuff I Dig

Ever feel like you’re just waiting for a spark? Waiting to FEEL like working out, but that feeling never comes?

Re-framing “motivation” may be necessary to get to your goals.

When people think of “motivation” they usually think of it as a FEELING. A desire TO do something. A push. Fire. A light. When I’m asked what motivates me, people want to know what lights my spark. What gets me to “feel” like working out.

The truth is, passion and fire go a LONG way. 50% of the time, it is easier for me to workout because I love it. I like to move. But the other 50% of my motivation comes from elsewhere. It’s not driven by passion, desire or a “spark”. It’s something else entirely.

The thing is, true motivation is not a FEELING. It’s incentive TO DO something. A reason WHY. Many people have a hard time getting motivated because they wait for the moment the “feel” like working out, as though it’s one in the same. That makes it easier, it’s true. But you will NOT always feel like working out . There will be days (and weeks), where dragging yourself out of bed and into your workout clothes will feel awful. You will miss workouts because of it. And that’s okay. But if you’re just waiting for the moment to “feel” like working out again, then you may be approaching motivation all wrong.

ASK YOURSELF: “What WILL get me moving right now” instead of “What will make me FEEL like moving right now”.

Two very different things.
For me, exercise is a mood regulator; it helps me manage my anxiety and be more productive. Even on days I don’t feel like working out, I know that going for a walk or just doing something quick will improve my mood and make my day easier. That’s incentive to me. For you, it might be weight loss. Or an upcoming vacation. Or because you know you’ll feel awesome after.

Motivation is different for everyone, because motivation depends on YOUR personality. What will get YOU to move. If you’re someone who’s eager to please, you can use that to your advantage by making workout dates with people you would hate to disappoint. If you’re someone who hates wasting money, a gym membership may do it for you. If you’re someone who likes routine, following a 30-60 day program with a pre-set calendar may be just what you need. If you enjoy dancing, dance (we tend to stick to things we find fun). Developing a relationship with an instructor or other people in your fitness class CAN help. Sometimes small bets help. Online accountability helps. Friends can help. Whatever it is, it will depend on your personality, what gets YOU inspired to move and what works best with YOUR circumstances & lifestyle (even if it’s changing).
Find what it is that will GET you to move, not necessarily what will make you FEEL like moving.

Make sense?
