Hey there! I just want to thank you for being so motivating! Your optimism is truly an inspiration :) Since I have started to create a more healthy life for myself, my mom has been eager to start her own fitness journey. However, she is wheelchair bound and has no use of her legs. She is also severely overweight, so many high intensity cardio exercises aren't very practical for her. Are there any low-intensity workouts that she can do with just her upper body that she can benefit from?

Hey there! Thanks so much!

There are tons of ways to stay and get active, even for those who are wheelchair bound. As with non-wheelchair bound peeps, diet is more important for weightloss, but even more so for individuals with limited mobility.

I’d hesitate to prescribe an exercise routine simply because everyone has different needs, issues and body limitations. I don’t have enough info about the nature of her injury/ailment/circumstances to know what is safe for her and I’d recommend she speak to a physical therapist, doctor or specialized trainer to develop a program or get an idea of what she can and cannot do. Most of the time, things like boxing combos (punches, speed bags etc), upper body resistance training (shoulder presses, bicep curls, tricep extensions) as well as simply wheeling the chair around (if it’s not automatic) are recommended and usually safe. However, I would caution that she should check with her doctor to know her limits in terms of heartrate, intensity, movement etc. If she cannot feel her legs or there’s a spinal injury, it makes it hard to notice when something’s wrong.

If she’s looking to lose weight, diet will be far more important. More greens, veggies, lean protein etc. Less processed foods, chemicals, sugars etc. Small changes add up BIG time. She can see results by simply making a few swaps and changes to her diet. Her BMR will be different that most, and again, that’s something she can determine with her doctor.

Hope this helps! Good luck to both of ya!

Xo
