Hey I really appreciate you and your blog. That said I wanted to ask you something, I've always done moderate exercise but about a month and a half ago I made the commitment to myself to kick it up. The way I did this was by starting the Insanity series. I'm pretty good about keeping to the schedule, but somedays, I feel mentally and physically exhausted. Do you have any advice on when to rest, how to get back in with the case of these prescheduled workouts, and how to reduce workout fatigue?

Hey there,

A few things the Insanity program doesn’t tell you….

1. You don’t have to follow the calendar to the letter. My first round I did the workouts about 3 times a week to build strength, and I was hella sore. I got stronger and the workouts got easier, but going my own pace was key to sticking with it.

2. You can combine the program with less intense workouts. Walking, yoga, pilates etc. On days you’re very sore, do the stretch routine instead.

3. Burnout (body and mind) is one of the biggest reasons people can’t stick to a program longterm. We take on too much too quickly. Insanity is intense, even for some very fit people. Slow down, take a week off to do something else, then keep going.

4. Over soreness and fatigue are signs of overtraining. This can cause injury down the line. Remember that results happen when we’re recovering, not when we’re working out (workouts are body damage, recovery is repair). If you’re very sore, take a day off Shaun T and walk/stretch instead. Maybe two days. Maybe 3.

When it comes to fitness, slow and steady wins the race! Extreme results programs can be useful to boost your fitness level, but your responsibility is to your body, not Shaun T. Your body will tell you what it needs: over soreness and fatigue are signs it needs a wee break. You’ll still benefit from the challenge, and will be better off modifying the program to suit your needs.

Push yourself when you can and give yourself plenty of time to recover from your workouts. And for mental burnout, change things up every now and then! There’s no rule you can’t. Swap some workouts for others, stay active on recovery days by walking, doing yoga, cycling etc.

Hope this helps!
