I'd like to say that your blog has been absolutely inspiring to me! I have slowly begun to change to a healthier diet and a more active lifestyle. Recently, I tried doing P90X, but I found it too difficult. So I'm starting with P90 as a work into P90X. However, after only the first two sections, I found my muscles so pained that I had to take a few days off, and was completely discouraged by this. Should I just fight through the pain, or wait till the muscles are healed and the pain is gone?

Hi there!

Congrats on the switch! Every little bit counts. I hope you’re patting yourself on the back as you go. :)

It’s perfectly normal to experience lots of soreness when you first start programs or classes: your muscles simply aren’t used to the movements yet. Programs like P90 & P90X don’t necessarily get any easier as you go along, but you will adapt better with time. Taking a few days off is perfectly fine - our bodies change during recovery and NOT during our workouts. Clearly, your body had a lot of rebuilding to do!

Simply jump back on when you’re ready. YOU are in charge, so don’t get discouraged! Often people freak because they feel like they’re losing momentum - there’s no need. Make a date, pencil it in, make it non-negotiable. The stress is all in your head, and if you did it once you can do it again! I will recommend that you add in some bonus or prolonged stretching & other forms of cardio along the way: walks, jogs or cycling are fine alternatives and getting moving sooner can cut your soreness down considerably.

No need to be discouraged! Take rest days whenever your body tells you it needs them, or find alternate activities to do. Don’t skimp on the stretching (X-Stretch is a great routine you can do anytime - just be warm first).

Pain and soreness are two different things: if you’re noticing pain, stop what you’re doing and don’t fight through it. If it’s soreness, take a few days off from those muscle groups, and do something light. As soon as you can, hop back on - the more often you do so, the easier it becomes to deal with the soreness.

Hope this helps!
